The School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences, Bangor University would like to invite you to take part in our research study. We are looking for people aged 50 and over.
The purpose of this study is to look at how people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compare with individuals who do not have RA (i.e. you), with regards to body composition (how much muscle and how much fat), and physical function. This will help guide future treatments for patients with RA.
You (and a friend/relative if you wish) will be asked to come to Bangor University for a 2 hour session in which you will have:
- DEXA scan to assess body fat, muscle mass & bone density
- Some physical function tests including handgrip strength and a short fitness test (3 minute step test)
- Fill out 2 questionnaires which assess function and quality of life
- Give a small blood sample
From these we can tell you about any age-related changes that can occur: loss of muscle or bone minerals, gain of fat (& your possible risk of future illness). The evidence we gain may help improve the treatment given to patients with RA.
