As reported in a previous edition of the Anglesey Informer, over 100 athletes from Ynys Mon flew to Rhodes in July to compete in the 12th Island Games.

Competitors took part in sweltering temperatures in a variety of sports ranging from athletics to football. The Island Games is staged on the lines of a mini-Olympics and it was a great experience for all competitors to come up against international competition in their sport and develop lifelong friendships with fellow islanders.

Many personal bests were exceeded and Ynys Mon competitors
were united in their praise of the event and the experience it had given them.

The Ynys Mon archery team excelled themselves by gaining 2 gold medals and a bronze. Rhys Jones won a gold in the individual gents FITA; a gold was won by the recurve team event and the ladies and gents FITA team received a bronze medal.

In Sailing Luke Breen Turner from Menai Bridge put in an outstanding
performance in his Laser standard rig, winning seven out of his eight races to gain a gold medal.

The final medal was taken by 15 year old Lucy Beesley from Ysgol David Hughes who finished in second position and gained a silver medal in the 100 metres with her time of 12.29.

Aland will host the 2009 games and Ynys Mon are working hard to improve their facilities on Ynys Mon to help strengthen their case for holding the 2015 Island Games.
