An Island Standing Stone
by Maureen Parry
(Cemaes Bay)
I am a standing stone
Grit-granite grey
solid embedded rooted
in the accommodating earth.
I stand defiant of the roars
of the Dragon breath winds,
the icy needles of the sleeting rain
I stand mellowing in the summer sun
cooled by sea mists and breezes
I smell the honeyed purple heather
the bright yellow gorse
I see terns wheeling and dealing
and hear seagulls grunt and thump
on their rocky beds.
I am a standing stone
who stands alone and aloof
A symbol of our ancient past
our here and now, our future hope
I am a standing stone,
I am invincible.
